History of Mysore Raceclub
In 1891, the then Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wadiyar, started the game of horse racing in the realm’s capital. In those days, the design where hustling exercises occurred was known as the Kebbe Katte Lodge, where the Jayachamarajendra School of Designing is found today.
“Races were held during the birthday festivities of Chamaraja Wadiyar. The lord was extremely partial to horse riding and consistently rode in the old Hinkal Race Course inside the Vijaya Sripura Reason for an hour each day. He frequently carried ponies to add to his corrals,” said Antiquarian Teacher PV Nanjaraje Urs, who has expounded widely on the Mysore Regal family.
He says that the children of Chamaraja Wadiyar were also partial to the game and set up ‘The Gymkhana,’ where races were held between 1897 and 1901. “Sir M Kantharaja Urs, their uncle, was likewise a dashing lover, and gymkhana was set up under his watch. It is now prominently known as Urs Gymkhana,” Prof Nanjaraje Urs said.
